Dozens suffer food poisoning after fast food meals in Numaniyah

WASIT — Dozens of people were treated for food poisoning in Wasit’s Numaniyah district on Sunday evening after consuming fast food from a local cafeteria, according to a medical source who spoke to 964media.

The source said most of those affected received treatment and were discharged from the hospital.

While an exact count is not yet available, initial figures suggest more than 50 individuals were affected. No deaths have been reported.

Health inspection teams, accompanied by security forces, shut down the cafeteria, the source added.

Several residents told 964media the number of cases appeared to increase throughout the day, with reports of illness beginning late Saturday night.

Conflicting accounts have circulated regarding the total number of cases.

The cafeteria is known locally for serving items such as falafel, shawarma, and burgers.

In early September, 29 people in Baqubah were treated for food poisoning after eating falafel meals at a newly opened restaurant, the Diyala Health Department said. The case followed other food poisoning outbreaks in Baghdad, Duhok, and Anbar in recent months, prompting calls for tighter enforcement.
