Germany condemns attack on Nechirvan Barzani’s residence
ERBIL — Germany condemned the drone attack on Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani’s residence in Duhok and reaffirmed its support for the region’s stability during a phone call between a senior German official and Barzani on Wednesday.
Géza Andreas von Geyr, State Secretary of the German Federal Foreign Office, “condemned the ongoing attacks on the Kurdistan Region, particularly the attack on President Nechirvan Barzani’s residence in Duhok,” and emphasized Germany’s “full support and solidarity with the Kurdistan Region,” according to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
Barzani thanked Germany for its support and said the Kurdistan Region “is committed to upholding peace and stability in both Iraq and the region.” The two sides discussed the political situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and the broader repercussions of the ongoing conflict.
The call adds to a growing chorus of international condemnation following the Duhok attack. U.S. President Trump condemned the strikes in a message delivered April 1, expressing sympathy and reaffirming full U.S. support for security and stability in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The State Department attributed the attack to “Iran’s terrorist militia proxies in Iraq.” The EU, UK, Jordan, UAE and Syria also condemned the strike. Prime Minister Sudani ordered a joint federal-KRG investigation, while Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani said the incident was among more than 450 attacks on the Kurdistan Region since the war began Feb. 28.
