13 security personnel wounded by gunfire as protests near Green Zone turn violent

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Interior Ministry said Sunday that 13 security personnel were wounded after “infiltrating elements” opened fire during protests near the Green Zone, as confrontations continued around the 14th of July Bridge and close to government buildings.

The ministry said security forces arrested 15 suspects, including three carrying weapons, who are being questioned “to determine their motives and those behind the attack.” It said a full investigation has been launched.

The Joint Operations Command said separately that caravans and a vehicle were burned on the bridge and that “the assailants used a pistol-type weapon.” It said security forces “adhered to the highest levels of military discipline and self-restraint and did not resort to the use of live fire despite being attacked,” and warned that forces would act under established rules of engagement against any attack on personnel or state institutions.

Clashes continued Sunday evening near the bridge, where demonstrators attempted to breach the Green Zone in protest over the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Riot police responded with stun grenades and tear gas. Some protesters told 964media that faction leaders should provide ambulances closer to the protest site rather than requiring the wounded to be carried long distances for treatment.

Fifteen suspects were arrested, three of them armed. The Interior Ministry said the wounded security personnel are in stable condition.
