Sudani, deputy speaker discuss political developments, constitutional requirements
BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani met Monday with Deputy Speaker Farhad Atrushi to discuss political developments and efforts to complete constitutional requirements, according to the prime minister’s media office.
The two sides reviewed “overall political developments across the national landscape” and discussed ongoing efforts to complete constitutional entitlements and “strengthen the democratic process.”
Al-Sudani emphasized cooperation between the legislative and executive authorities and supporting the work of parliament “during this particularly important phase.”
He said coordination is needed to advance development projects, address economic challenges, and reinforce efforts to “maximize revenues, rationalize expenditures, and regulate public spending priorities.”
Iraq’s government formation has stalled since the 2025 elections. Parliament must elect a president before a prime minister can be tasked, but the constitutional deadline has passed.
The Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan have not agreed on a presidential candidate. The PUK has named Nizar Amedi, while the KDP has nominated Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein.
The Shiite Coordination Framework has nominated former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. President Donald Trump said the United States would not continue support for Iraq if al-Maliki returned to office.
