Iraq affirms support for Iran-US talks in call between foreign ministers

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on Saturday reaffirmed Iraq’s full support for the negotiation process between Tehran and Washington during a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to a statement from Iraq’s Foreign Ministry.

The statement said that “the Iranian minister reviewed, during the call, the course of negotiations held between the Iranian and American delegations, conveying a comprehensive picture of the atmosphere of the talks and the issues discussed, particularly the results of the latest round held in the Sultanate of Oman, which he described as ‘positive and serious.’”

It continued that “the two sides discussed the next steps, including holding a new round of negotiations next Tuesday in the city of Geneva,” stressing “the importance of continuing dialogue in a way that contributes to achieving constructive results that enhance stability in the region.”

The statement said that “Fuad Hussein, for his part, stressed the importance of reaching positive results during the upcoming meeting in Geneva,” affirming “Iraq’s full support for the negotiation process, and his wishes for its success in serving the security and stability of the region.”
