Mosul doctor sentenced to death for burning wife alive in car

MOSUL — A Nineveh Criminal Court on Sunday sentenced a doctor to death for killing his wife, also a physician, by setting her on fire inside her car in Mosul.

The court convicted Ismail Atiya Karji of murdering his wife, Israa Azzam Suleiman, according to judicial media. In mid-December, Karji poured gasoline on his wife while she was in her car and set her ablaze. She died in early January after suffering severe burns covering most of her body.

The ruling was issued under Article 406 of Penal Code No. 111 of 1969.

The case drew wide attention in Mosul after authorities announced the arrest of a doctor accused of setting his wife on fire following what police described as a family dispute.

Doctors unions and medical circles in Nineveh issued statements condemning the killing, describing it as a shocking crime that affected the local medical community.

Judicial authorities have not disclosed a motive.
