Basra police find weapons tunnel inside wanted man’s house

BASRA — Iraqi police said Thursday they discovered a tunnel inside the home of a wanted suspect in Al-Shafi subdistrict in northern Basra governorate, where various weapons and ammunition were seized during a security operation.

Basra Police said in a statement that a joint force from the Al-Deir Police Department, supported by the North Basra Emergency Police Regiment and the 12th Federal Police Brigade, carried out search operations “to pursue individuals wanted by the judiciary for inciting tribal tensions and to seize uncontrolled weapons” in Al-Deir district’s Al-Shafi subdistrict.

The statement said that during the search of one suspect’s house, security forces found a tunnel and seized the following items: “one pistol; six Kalashnikov magazines; eight G3 rifle magazines; 200 rounds of G3 ammunition; 207 rounds of Kalashnikov ammunition; one BKC belt with a capacity of 100 rounds; two empty portable BKC ammunition boxes; two rifle grips; two Kalashnikov handguards; and one mishlah.”

Police said the operation is part of “ongoing security efforts by the North Basra Police Directorate to impose the rule of law and enhance security and stability within its area of responsibility in northern Basra.”
