Iraq records 27,000 marriages and nearly 4,900 divorces in December
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council announced Monday that more than 27,000 marriage contracts and 4,888 divorce cases were recorded across the country in December 2025, excluding the Kurdistan Region, according to official statistics received by 964media.
The council said a total of 27,002 marriage contracts were registered nationwide during the month, compared with 4,888 divorces. Baghdad’s Rusafa Court of Appeal recorded the highest number of marriages, with 4,112 contracts and 798 divorce cases, followed by the Karkh Court of Appeal with 3,237 marriages and 692 divorces.
Nineveh Governorate recorded 3,064 marriages and 530 divorces, while Diyala Governorate saw 1,146 marriages and 343 divorces. Babil Governorate registered 1,567 marriages and 241 divorces, and Najaf Governorate recorded 1,363 marriages and 208 divorces.
In Kirkuk Governorate, courts registered 916 marriages and 252 divorces, while Dhi Qar recorded 1,535 marriages and 295 divorces. Anbar Governorate saw 1,494 marriages and 300 divorces, and Basra Governorate recorded 2,481 marriages and 253 divorces.
Wasit Governorate registered 975 marriages and 115 divorces, Salah al-Din recorded 1,059 marriages and 250 divorces, Muthanna saw 919 marriages and 92 divorces, and Maysan recorded 1,044 marriages and 71 divorces. Karbala Governorate registered 1,175 marriages and 245 divorces, while Qadisiyah recorded 915 marriages and 203 divorces, according to the council’s data.
Iraq’s latest general census shows the country’s population has surpassed 46 million people, according to results announced by the Planning Ministry. The nationwide count recorded about 46.1 million residents, including more than 45.7 million Iraqi citizens and around 340,000 foreign residents, making it the most comprehensive demographic survey conducted in nearly four decades.
