Interior minister orders probe into inmate death in Maysan

MAYSAN — Iraq’s Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari on Friday ordered the formation of an investigative committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the death of an inmate accused of drug trafficking in Maysan.

In a statement, the Interior Ministry said its General Directorate for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Affairs continues its efforts to track down drug traffickers and dealers. The ministry said drug enforcement units in Maysan arrested three individuals wanted under the Anti-Narcotics Law, and seized approximately one kilogram of crystal methamphetamine following judicial approval.

The statement noted that during detention procedures, one of the suspects experienced a deterioration in his health shortly after being taken into custody. He died while being transported to a medical facility for treatment.
