Baghdad Police arrest father accused of violence against six-year-old son

BAGHDAD — Baghdad’s Karkh Police Command said it arrested a man accused of assaulting his six-year-old son after the family filed an official complaint reporting the abuse. Police said the child is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment, while the suspect has been referred to the relevant authorities to complete investigative and legal procedures.

In a statement, the Karkh Police Command said the Al-Hurriya Police Department, working with community police units, arrested the suspect “as part of ongoing efforts to protect families and support community safety.” According to the statement, the arrest followed a report from the child’s relatives stating he had been subjected to beating and harm. Police said units immediately moved to the location, took “necessary procedural steps,” detained the suspect and recorded his statement.

The command said the child “is currently in the hospital receiving treatment,” and the suspect has been transferred to the proper authorities “to complete investigative and legal procedures in accordance with the law.”

Police said they remain committed to acting firmly in all cases involving domestic violence and urged residents to report such incidents through hotlines or by visiting the nearest police station.

Similar incidents have drawn public concern in recent months. In October, Rasafa Police announced the arrest of a man accused of beating his daughter with a plastic hose after a video circulated online showing the assault in Baghdad’s Hay al-Ri’asa area. Police said the suspect was detained and the child placed under protection, adding that security forces “will not tolerate any act that violates human values or assaults family members.” Domestic and family violence remains widespread in Iraq, with nearly 14,000 cases reported in the first five months of 2024, according to an Interior Ministry report, and officials say the rise is linked to the absence of strong legal protections for victims, especially women and children.
