Man arrested in Baghdad under suspicion of killing wife in Najaf

BAGHDAD — The Intelligence and Federal Investigations Agency announced Tuesday the arrest of a man accused of killing and burning his wife in Najaf, following an operation that tracked him to Baghdad’s Karkh district.

The agency said in a statement that “specialized units from the Intelligence and Counterterrorism directorates in Najaf and Baghdad/Karkh apprehended the suspect who had previously killed and burned his wife.”

It added that the arrest “was carried out based on precise intelligence information and field monitoring, which enabled the agency’s units to locate and capture him in Baghdad, Karkh.”

The suspect has been handed over to the competent investigative authorities “to face justice,” the agency said.

According to the Interior Ministry, nearly 14,000 complaints related to domestic and family violence were filed across Iraq in the first four months of 2024, the majority involving women. However, only about 100 of those cases led to criminal convictions.

The ministry said roughly 3,000 suspects were released on bail and nearly 4,500 cases ended in “reconciliation” between the victims and perpetrators.
