Iraqi authorities deny reports of Syrian border closure
ANBAR — Iraqi authorities denied on Sunday a wave of social media posts claiming that the Al-Qaim border crossing with Syria had been closed, confirming that trade and passenger movement continue normally under government supervision.
The Border Ports Authority said in a statement that “trade movement with Syria through the Al-Qaim border crossing is ongoing as usual, in compliance with procedures and regulations approved by the Iraqi government to ensure smooth trade flow and safe passage.”
The clarification came after posts widely shared on social media alleged that Iraq had shut down the crossing following reports that armed groups in Al-Bukamal, Deir Ezzor, detained Iraqi travelers and seized their vehicles. Other unverified accounts claimed that the government had temporarily closed the crossing for security reasons or to carry out urgent maintenance.
The Border Ports Authority reaffirmed that all facilities and staff at Al-Qaim are functioning normally, emphasizing that the crossing remains open and that movement through it is proceeding smoothly.
The Al-Qaim–Al-Bukamal crossing was officially reopened on June 14, 2025, after years of limited activity, and continues to serve as an important link for economic cooperation and cross-border trade between Iraq and Syria.
