Gathering by PMF supporters marks first anniversary of Hassan Nasrallah’s killing

BAGHDAD — Dozens of people gathered in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square on Friday to mark the first anniversary of the assassination of former Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah.

The gathering featured displays of photos of those killed and documentary screenings highlighting what organizers described as key “achievements”.

PMF Deputy Director of Operations Ibrahim Al-Lami told 964media, “We offer our condolences to the Islamic nation on the first anniversary of the martyrdom of the master of resistance, Hassan Nasrallah.”

He added that the anniversary represents a defining moment for Shiites, PMF fighters, and “resistance” factions, stating, “Through this, we renew our allegiance and loyalty.”

Hassan Nasrallah was killed on Sept. 27, 2024, in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a Hezbollah command center in Beirut. His successor, Hashem Safieddine, was also killed in a separate Israeli strike in October.

Muhannad Hussein, deputy director of the PMF’s media office, said the commemoration was organized in coordination with the Central Popular Committee and the Central Cultural Committee, and included remembrance of both Nasrallah and Hashim Safieddine, who was also killed.

“This gathering expresses the sorrow of the Iraqi people and their solidarity with the Lebanese people,” Hussein said, adding that Lebanese fighters had supported Iraq during its war against terrorist groups, and that the resulting victories were “achieved thanks to the sacrifices of the martyrs.”

He described Nasrallah as “a national and religious figure whose stature remains strong among Muslims in general and Iraqis in particular.”

PMF spokesperson Kareem Al-Kinani also spoke to 964media, saying, “We offer our condolences to the Islamic world on this painful anniversary of the martyrdom of the master of resistance, Hassan Nasrallah, at the hands of the Zionist entity.”

He added, “Commemorations are being held across Iraq, not only in Baghdad,” and that the PMF would “continue the path of jihad and resistance in the name of Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah.”
