Al-Sudani urges ‘unified’ Arab-Islamic stance at Doha summit after Qatar attack
BAGHDAD – Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on Monday joined Arab and Islamic leaders at the Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit in Doha, urging a “unified” response to what he called regional “aggression.”
In his address, al-Sudani said Iraq “unequivocally” condemns the attacks “targeting the security and stability of the region” and stands in “full solidarity with the State of Qatar, the Palestinian people, and all nations that have come under aggression, including Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iran.”
He described the assault on Qatar as “a dangerous escalation, a violation of international law, and a threat to efforts aimed at defusing regional tensions,” warning that it “deliberately eliminates prospects for peaceful solutions.”
The summit was convened after Israel struck the Qatari capital, Doha, in an attack it said was based on “accurate intelligence” against senior Hamas leaders. The strike reportedly coincided with a scheduled Hamas leadership meeting.
Statement from Al-Sudani’s media office:
Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani participated today, Monday, in the Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit held in Doha, the capital of the State of Qatar.
In his speech, Prime Minister Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq’s unequivocal condemnation of the attacks targeting the security and stability of the region. He expressed full solidarity with the State of Qatar, the Palestinian people, and all nations that have come under aggression, including Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iran.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani stressed that the assault on Qatar represents a dangerous escalation, a violation of international law, and a threat to efforts aimed at defusing regional tensions, particularly in light of Qatar’s diplomatic mediation initiatives. He emphasized that this aggression deliberately eliminates prospects for peaceful solutions.
The Prime Minister called on international and United Nations organizations, as well as major world powers, to uphold their responsibilities in preventing the occupying power from deliberately undermining the global system. He affirmed that the security and stability of any Arab or Islamic nation is an integral part of collective security and is not subject to negotiation.
Key Highlights from the Prime Minister’s Remarks:
🔹 Iraq calls for a unified Arab-Islamic position condemning the aggression against Doha, and for international measures to hold the aggressor accountable under international law.
🔹 Iraq urges that any attack against Arab or Islamic states be treated as a threat to collective national security, necessitating coordinated diplomatic efforts and deterrent measures to prevent future aggression.
🔹 Iraq calls for the establishment of a broad Islamic alliance comprising Arab and Islamic countries to address current security and economic challenges facing our peoples.
🔹 Iraq proposes forming a joint Arab-Islamic contact group to approach the UN Security Council, the United Nations, and the European Union to convey a unified stance and advocate for the rights of our peoples.
🔹 A comprehensive roadmap must be created to establish an internationally supervised ceasefire in Gaza, followed by a UN-Arab jointly managed reconstruction program.
🔹 A political path must be pursued to guarantee the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, the rightful owners of the land.
🔹 Mechanisms for consultation and coordination between our states must be strengthened to ensure a collective response to any threats to our sovereignty and security, and to activate a joint deterrence system to protect regional stability.
🔹 The occupying authority is flagrantly violating international law and the UN Charter and is deliberately escalating conflict in the region.
🔹 The occupying entity must be deterred, particularly as it openly threatens to alter international borders by force—an act that would result in greater instability.
🔹 Ongoing policies of starvation and genocide in Gaza will only deepen the cycle of violence, chaos, and insecurity for all.
🔹 The violence, forced displacement, and destruction of infrastructure in Gaza and the West Bank have caused an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.
🔹 Iraq warns that the continuation of such criminal aggression without accountability threatens to severely undermine the global international order.
