Cat carcass mistaken for child’s body at Akre cemetery

AKRE — A strong odor detected at a cemetery in Akre on Wednesday initially raised fears that a child’s body had been discovered, but a forensic investigation later confirmed the remains belonged to a cat, according to health officials.

Environmental workers cleaning the Sari Gre cemetery in Akre district noticed a foul smell and found what appeared to be a body wrapped in a red shroud. Authorities were notified, and the remains were sent to the forensic medical unit in Akre before being transferred to Duhok for further analysis.

“The body was taken to the Duhok forensic medical examination by ambulance yesterday evening,” said Matin Jamil, spokesperson for Duhok’s health department.

“The results of the forensic examination revealed that the body was a cat, not a child,” he added.

Nechirvan Fakhreddin, spokesperson for Akre’s health department, had initially confirmed that “a body was found in Sari Gre,” before the results clarified the situation.
