Sudani pledges support to Iran in call with President Pezeshkian after Israeli strikes
BAGHDAD – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani on Sunday expressed Iraq’s “full solidarity” with Iran during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, condemning what he described as a “blatant Zionist aggression” and offering support in the aftermath of the strikes.
According to a statement from Al-Sudani’s media office, the prime minister said Iraq views Iran’s security and stability as “integral to the security and stability of the entire region.” He affirmed Iraq’s readiness to provide “all necessary forms of assistance,” describing it as part of the principles of solidarity that “unite Islamic nations.”
The call follows Israel’s large-scale military operation which began on June 13 and targeted more than 100 sites across Iran, including nuclear facilities. Iran has reported dozens of deaths, including senior military commanders and nuclear scientists. The two countries have trading missile and drone strikes as the conflict enters its third day.
Statement from Al-Sudani’s media office:
Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani held a phone call today, Sunday, with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. Masoud Pezeshkian.
During the call, His Excellency expressed Iraq’s full solidarity, at both the governmental and popular levels, with the Islamic Republic of Iran in the face of the blatant Zionist aggression. He affirmed that Iraq considers Iran’s security and stability to be integral to the security and stability of the entire region. He also underscored Iraq’s keenness to prevent any further escalation of the conflict, noting the government’s efforts on multiple fronts to prevent violations of Iraqi airspace by the Zionist entity.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq’s readiness to provide all necessary forms of assistance to address the consequences of the aggression against Iran, in line with the principles of solidarity that unite Islamic nations.
President Pezeshkian expressed his gratitude to Iraq, its official institutions and its people, for their clear and resolute stance in rejecting the actions of the Zionist entity, including its repeated attacks on countries in the region and its ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people. He emphasized the importance of Islamic nations adopting a unified position to confront these acts of aggression and the blatant violations of international law, which pose a threat to other Islamic countries as well.
