Child presumed drowned in Great Zab River on first day of Eid
DUHOK — A young child is presumed drowned after falling into the Great Zab River in the Deraluk subdistrict of Amedi on the first day of Eid al-Adha, local health and emergency officials said.
Masoud Boti, deputy director of Amedi district health, told 964media the child, between six and seven years old, drowned Friday afternoon in the Great Zab River in the Deraluk area.
He said the child, named Sihad Osman, was a resident of Deraluk. Civil defense teams began searching for the body immediately after the incident, but it has not yet been recovered.
Eyewitness Mohammed Rekan, who was present at the scene, told 964media, “The child entered the river to play and suddenly lost his balance and fell into the water. He was swept away and drowned.”
Rekan said the body has not been located due to the strong current of the Great Zab. Rescue teams remain active in the area.
