Iraq not ‘venue for settling scores,’ Al-Maliki tells Russian ambassador

BAGHDAD — Nouri Al-Maliki, former PM and head of the State of Law Coalition, met with Russian Ambassador Elbrus Kutrashev in Baghdad on Sunday to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments, according to a statement from Al-Maliki’s media office.

Al-Maliki called for “expanding cooperation between Iraq and the Russian Federation in a way that serves the interests of both peoples,” stressing that the Middle East faces “serious challenges that require collaborative efforts to preserve security and stability.” He added, “Iraq will not be a venue for settling scores.”

Head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri Al-Maliki, received the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Iraq, Elbrus Kutrashev, at his office today.

The two sides exchanged views on Russia-Iraq relations and reciprocal visits between officials of the two friendly countries. They also discussed regional and international developments, particularly in Syria, Palestine, and Lebanon, as well as the repercussions of the Russia-Ukraine war and the ongoing negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States.

Al-Maliki highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation between Iraq and the Russian Federation in a way that serves the interests of both peoples. He stated that the Middle East is facing serious challenges that require collaborative efforts to preserve security and stability and to steer the region away from dangers. He emphasized that Iraq will not be a venue for settling scores.

The Russian ambassador commended Iraq’s efforts in laying the foundations of peace in the region, reaffirming Moscow’s commitment to continued bilateral cooperation in support of the security, stability, and well-being of both countries.
