Second case of hemorrhagic fever confirmed in Duhok governorate
DUHOK — A second case of hemorrhagic fever has been confirmed in Duhok governorate, according to local health officials, who say the patient is in stable condition and under medical supervision.
A 45-year-old woman from the Shiladze subdistrict, part of Amedi district, tested positive on Thursday, May 22, after being admitted to Azadi Hospital in Duhok four days earlier with symptoms of the disease.
“The result of the test for a woman from the Shiladze area came out today, and she tested positive for the virus,” Mateen Jameel, spokesperson for the Duhok Directorate of Health, told 964media.
“The patient is in stable condition and is being closely monitored at Azadi Hospital,” he said.
This follows the death of another 45-year-old woman earlier this month, who also tested positive for hemorrhagic fever. She died on May 10, two days after being admitted to the hospital.
Health officials confirmed the earlier patient had contact with a previously infected individual. Medical teams continue to monitor the situation and trace any potential further exposure.
This marks the fourth recorded case in the Kurdistan Region this year. Across the country, Iraq’s Ministry of Health has reported more than 50 cases to date.
Hemorrhagic fever, often transmitted through ticks or direct contact with infected animals or bodily fluids, poses a recurring threat in Iraq’s rural areas, particularly during the warmer seasons.
