Twelve Erbil, two Sulaymaniyah neighborhoods get 24-hour electricity supply
KURDISTAN REGION – The Ministry of Electricity has added 12 neighborhoods in Erbil and two in Sulaymaniyah to the Runaki Project, bringing uninterrupted 24-hour electricity to more areas of the Kurdistan Region, officials announced.
The newly connected Erbil neighborhoods include Shoresh, Kani, Nuseran, Kwestan, Komari, Runaki, Pzishkan, Mantkawa, Azar, Zanko, Hamrin and Sharawani. In Sulaymaniyah, Hawari Taza and part of Tuwey Malek have also joined the grid.
“This follows the recent integration of several neighborhoods in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and Duhok into the Runaki Project with 24-hour electricity, and it will soon reach Halabja Governorate,” the ministry said in a statement.
Since its launch on Oct. 17, 2024 by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the Runaki Project has delivered around-the-clock electricity to nearly 600,000 residents. The effort has also led to the shutdown of more than 750 private generators across 43 neighborhoods, the ministry said.
The project draws on existing energy sources, including natural gas from the Khor Mor field and hydroelectric power from the Dukan and Darbandikhan dams. Officials aim to extend uninterrupted electricity across the entire Kurdistan Region by the end of 2026.
