Fire at Erbil steel factory brought under control after five hours
ERBIL — A fire that broke out Monday at a steel factory in the Mamzawa neighborhood of Erbil was brought under control after more than five hours, local civil defense officials said.
The fire erupted around 11:15 a.m., damaging a warehouse containing steel and rebar materials. Ten civil defense teams responded to the scene and worked for hours to extinguish the flames.
Shakhawan Saeed, spokesperson for Erbil’s Civil Defense, told 964media that the fire was contained and teams were in the process of cooling the site to eliminate any remaining risks.
Saeed said there were no casualties and that material damage was limited.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities said findings will be detailed in the final report.
The incident follows a major fire on Sunday that heavily damaged the Gamivan restaurant and café on the Erbil-Pirmam Road. The cause of that fire is also under investigation.
From January to October 2024, the Erbil Civil Defense recorded 2,057 fire incidents. The leading cause was dried grass and shrubs, accounting for 842 cases. These fires resulted in 46 fatalities — including 22 deaths from burns and 24 from suffocation — and 89 injuries. Civil defense teams managed to rescue 56 individuals and 11 vehicles during these emergencies.
