Man arrested in Erbil for selling counterfeit gold, officials say

ERBIL — Security forces in Erbil have arrested a man accused of manufacturing and distributing counterfeit gold in local markets, according to a statement released by the Erbil Asayish Directorate.

The suspect, identified by his initials R.A.R., is a Syrian national and was taken into custody on April 20 following complaints from gold shop owners about suspicious transactions.

“Our forces arrested a suspect who manufactured a quantity of fake gold and distributed it in Erbil markets,” the statement said.

Authorities launched an investigation after several jewelers reported fake items being sold in their shops. Surveillance and intelligence gathering helped locate the suspect.

“After gathering information and conducting surveillance, we confirmed the identity and location of the accused,” the statement said. “An arrest warrant was issued by the investigative judge of the Erbil Security Directorate, and the suspect was taken into custody.”

The Asayish urged residents to report suspicious activity. “We thank citizens for their continued cooperation in providing information,” the directorate added.
