Traffic officer severely injured after being run over by truck driver
BASRA — A traffic department officer in Basra was seriously injured Sunday evening after being deliberately struck by a truck driver who refused to follow road restrictions, according to a security source.
The incident occurred as traffic police were redirecting cargo trucks away from a bridge in the city. “The incident happened when a traffic patrol was preventing cargo trucks from using a bridge in Basra and redirecting them,” the source told 964media. “One of the drivers refused to comply and told the officer, ‘I’ll cross the bridge no matter what,’ then hit the officer with the truck.”
The officer sustained severe injuries, including the loss of one leg and serious trauma to the other. “The officer lost one leg entirely, and the other was shattered,” the source said. Graphic images of the injuries were withheld by 964media due to their disturbing nature.
After the assault, the driver fled the scene and abandoned the vehicle. Security forces have launched a search to locate and arrest the suspect.
The injured officer was transported to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition. His name has not been released.
