Man with knife attacks Quriya police station, officer fatally stabbed

KIRKUK — A man armed with a knife attacked Quriya Police Station in Kirkuk early Tuesday, fatally stabbing an officer before fleeing into a residential area, authorities said.

The attack occurred around 5:30 a.m. when the assailant stormed the station and stabbed the officer to death.

Local residents said the attacker, originally from Maysan Governorate, is believed to suffer from mental health issues and had been living in Kirkuk’s Quriya neighborhood.

After the stabbing, the man ran into nearby houses while still holding the knife, causing panic among residents, particularly women and children.

Police later apprehended him and transferred him to prison. Authorities launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
