Iraq’s National Security Service foils copper smuggling attempt in Diyala
DIYALA — Security forces in Diyala intercepted a flatbed truck on Monday carrying six tons of copper allegedly bound for the Kurdistan Region, according to a statement from the National Security Service.
Acting on intelligence reports, officers discovered the copper hidden “in a professional manner” inside water tanks and beneath the truck’s radiator section. Investigators noted the vehicle had no documentation from the Ministry of Industry and Minerals.
Legal approvals were obtained before authorities seized the truck and detained two suspects, who remain in custody pending further investigation. Officials have documented the confiscated materials, and legal proceedings are ongoing.
