'Expired goods'
Baghdad authorities shut food warehouses and medical center in Ramadan health drive
BAGHDAD — Baghdad Operations Command announced Monday the closure of several wholesale food warehouses in the Jamila area after officials discovered and destroyed large quantities of expired goods.
In a statement, the command said the closures are part of preventive measures during Ramadan to protect public health, and all expired products were disposed of following official procedures.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting from dawn to sunset.
In a related action, authorities also shut down a medical center in the Harithiya area for operating without official permits; the center’s owner was arrested.
Yesterday, Sulaymaniyah officials confiscated 60 tons of expired frozen meat deemed unfit for consumption. Authorities said the meat’s owner had planned to reintroduce the product into the market during Ramadan, but intervention occurred before any sales could take place. The entire shipment has been seized, and further legal action is expected.
