Duhok man surrenders to police following killing of two Akre brothers

DUHOK — A man accused of killing two brothers in Akre surrendered to security forces and is now under investigation, authorities confirmed.

The deadly altercation unfolded in Bakrman village within the Akre district of Duhok governorate, where a dispute between cousins escalated into violence. Two brothers, aged 20 and 23, were fatally shot.

Shortly after the incident, Akre police announced that the suspect had turned himself in and was handed over to security forces before being transferred to the police for further investigation. “The suspect is being questioned under Article 406 of the Penal Code,” the police statement said.

While initial law enforcement reports indicated that one person had been killed and another injured, Nechirvan Fakhreddin, the spokesperson for Akre’s health department, later confirmed that both victims had died. “The body of a 23-year-old and an injured individual were taken to Akre’s emergency hospital,” he told 964media. “The victim had suffered four gunshot wounds, and his remains were later sent to Duhok’s forensic department for examination.”

Health officials stated that the second victim, a 20-year-old, was critically injured with a gunshot wound to the eye. He was transferred to a hospital in Erbil but later succumbed to his injuries. “Both victims were brothers, and the suspect is their cousin,” Fakhreddin confirmed.

The incident occurred in the evening, coinciding with the call to prayer marking the beginning of Ramadan. Authorities continue to investigate the case.
