Kirkuk hosts children’s race to celebrate Students Day ahead of Ramadan

KIRKUK — More than 300 elementary school students from across Kirkuk participated in a children’s race organized by Kirkuk Mall in collaboration with the local Olympic committee, marking Students Day as families prepare for Ramadan.

“The children’s race is one of the most important sporting activities for young students,” said Harbi Khalid, head of the local Olympic committee. “It teaches them the value of sports and keeps them away from distractions that might take them away from their studies.”

The event featured both boys’ and girls’ categories, with winners receiving prizes.

“I am 12 years old, and I participated in the Kirkuk Mall competition, winning first place,” said Maryam Hamad, the top finisher in the girls’ category. “I hope these sports activities continue so we can always take part in them.”

Khalid Youssef, the boys’ first-place winner, said this was his first time competing in such an event. “I am in sixth grade and won first place. I hope more races like this are organized so we can keep enjoying these wonderful activities,” he said.

Kirkuk Mall’s director, Qais Qazzaz, described the event as a unique experience for children between the ages of 6 and 12.

“We are thrilled to organize this race, the first of its kind in the city, with over 300 students from different schools participating,” Qazzaz said. “International races require long distances, but since the participants are young, we kept it to one kilometer. These events must continue to keep our children healthy and active.”
