AI’s rise sparks debate among Najaf painters over true artistry

NAJAF — Visual artists in this historic city say the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence is reshaping how people create and view paintings. Despite AI’s ability to generate images within minutes—no brushstrokes or formal training required—local painters insist that technology cannot replicate the emotion and effort behind handmade art.

“Anyone who wants to gift a painting to someone can now use AI to generate the image they want,” said young painter Aqmar Abdul Ali, speaking to 964media. She worries that widespread use of AI could reduce financial opportunities for artists who depend on selling their work.

Ali believes, however, that AI creations cannot capture the heart and soul of real paintings. “When AI produces a painting, it doesn’t exert effort or convey the artist’s feelings. For painters, it’s different because a painting is the result of their dedication to detail, and they spend more time on it, which gives it sentimental value.”

She noted that many artists in Najaf focus on expressive pieces meant to communicate emotion. “Many artists prefer expressive artworks because they allow others to feel what they are experiencing. A viewer with an artistic sense can distinguish between AI-generated paintings and those created by human artists. But if someone lacks artistic knowledge, they might not tell the difference.”

Local artist Ali Al-Rumahi has observed the impact of digital art tools on younger generations. “I am an artist from Najaf, and I focus on artistic and aesthetic-themed exhibitions. AI and digital painting have significantly changed how young people view art,” he told 964media.

He recalled a time when painters invested countless hours perfecting each brushstroke. “In the past, a painter would put a lot of effort into creating a masterpiece with skill and precision. Today, anyone can take a short AI course, and within days, they can assemble images and produce what appears to be art. But these works lack true artistic beauty.”

Al-Rumahi explained that mass-produced digital art has overshadowed the commitment required to create oil paintings and other handcrafted works. “Handmade art requires skill, dedication, and craftsmanship.”

He also stressed that computer-generated images lack a vital element of human creativity. “Hand-drawn paintings result in a complete artistic piece. With brief training, anyone can produce simple digital works, but they lack the deep beauty that defines traditional art. Still, handmade artwork retains its unique value and continues to attract admirers who appreciate genuine creativity and artistic originality.”
