Man arrested in Koya under suspicion of killing his sister in Erbil
ERBIL — A man suspected of killing his sister earlier this month in Erbil has been arrested in Koya, according to security officials.
The incident occurred on Jan. 11, 2025, in the Fermanbaran neighborhood of Erbil, where a woman identified by authorities as J.Y.T was allegedly killed by her brother following a “family dispute.”
The suspect fled the scene after the incident.
The General Directorate of Sulaymaniyah Security stated that, after the news was disseminated through media outlets, a coordinated effort was launched between the East Erbil Security Directorate and the Sulaymaniyah Security Directorate, with assistance from the Information Technology Directorate, to locate and apprehend the suspect. “Following the collection of intelligence, it was determined that the suspect had taken refuge in the city of Koya,” the statement read.
On Jan. 15, 2025, the suspect, identified as T.Y.T, was arrested in Koya. The weapon allegedly used in the crime was also seized during the arrest. The Sulaymaniyah Security Directorate confirmed that the suspect is currently detained under Article 406 of the Iraqi Penal Code, and investigations are ongoing.
