Lights, flowers, shared celebrations

Najaf’s streets shine bright for New Year as festive spirit takes over

NAJAF — Najaf is decked out for New Year celebrations, with main streets such as Al-Rawan, Al-Ghadeer, Al-Sadrain Square, and Najaf-Kufa Road illuminated by decorative lights and festive installations set up by the city’s municipality. Residents expressed their happiness with the preparations, noting that the city’s vibrant decorations are also catching the attention of visitors to the holy shrines.

Najaf, one of the holiest cities in Shia Islam, holds immense religious significance as the site of the shrine of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad and the first Imam in Shia Islam. The city serves as a major spiritual and pilgrimage center, attracting millions of visitors annually from across the world.

Gift and flower shop owners have reported increased sales this year compared to previous ones, with storefronts adorned in red, reflecting the festive theme of Santa Claus and New Year celebrations.

“We are happy with the decorations in Najaf, from the lights on the trees to the illuminated displays. Visitors to the city will notice the difference in the colors and festive atmosphere this year compared to previous years,” said local resident Mohammed Amin. “As usual, I will go out with my friends to celebrate New Year’s Eve.”

Another resident, Hassan Sahib, shared his experience, saying, “We are joyful about the preparations and these illuminated structures set up by the municipality. Every New Year’s Eve, I travel with my friends to Karbala. It’s a tradition for me. We share both grief and joy with our Christian brothers and sisters.”

Florist Hassanain Al-Rifai noted a surge in sales this season. “During Christmas and New Year, we join our Christian brothers in their celebrations. This year, we have noticed an increased demand for flowers and gifts compared to previous years,” he said.

Many young people in Najaf are purchasing flowers and gifts for their loved ones, wives, and children in celebration of New Year’s Eve.

Seif Al-Saadi, a local resident, shared his excitement while shopping at a flower and gift shop. “Today, I am here to buy New Year’s gifts for my wife and children on this beautiful occasion. We usually celebrate with our Christian brothers to share in this joy.”
