EU explores easing visa access for Iraqis as ambassador highlights ‘positive security inprovements’
BAGHDAD — The European Union is considering ways to facilitate visa access for Iraqi citizens, citing Iraq’s improved security situation as a key factor.
In an interview with Iraq’s state-run newspaper Al-Sabah, EU Ambassador to Iraq Thomas Seiler highlighted the significance of the positive developments in Iraq’s security landscape. “The European Union recognizes the significant and positive security improvements in Iraq. We are working with member states to identify ways to simplify and ease visa access for Iraqi citizens,” he said.
Iraqis seeking to legally enter EU countries often encounter significant challenges in obtaining visas, due to stringent immigration policies and limited legal pathways. This has led many to resort to irregular migration routes, frequently facilitated by smuggling networks.
Seiler added that the EU aims to strengthen ties through increased mobility and cultural exchanges, facilitating opportunities for Iraqis in education and employment across Europe.
The ambassador also emphasized the growing cooperation between Iraq and the EU in trade and investment. “There is cooperation in many fields, and we hope to see an increase in trade and investment exchanges between EU member states and Iraq,” he noted.
On regional developments, Seiler acknowledged Iraq’s diplomatic role in addressing tensions in the region, particularly regarding the situation in Syria. He stated that the EU remains in regular consultation with the Iraqi government to exchange views and address shared challenges. “The European Union greatly values Iraq’s successful efforts to de-escalate regional tensions,” Seiler said.
Additionally, the ambassador described Iraq’s Development Road Project as a strategic infrastructure initiative with regional significance. “For the European Union, the Iraqi Development Road Project is a vital infrastructure initiative for the entire region. European companies are already working at the Grand Faw Port, and we aim to expand our cooperation further,” he explained.
