Iraqi resistance group claims responsibility for drone strike in northern Israel

BAGHDAD — The Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility for a drone strike on a military target in northern Israel on Thursday, according to a statement issued by the group.

“In continuation of our path in resisting the occupation, and in support of our people in Palestine and Lebanon, and in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity against civilians, including children, women, and the elderly, the Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq today, Thursday, October 24, 2024, attacked a military target in the northern occupied territories using drone aircraft,” the statement read.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq is a coalition of pro-Iranian armed groups in Iraq, identifying as part of the broader resistance movement against foreign military presence, especially the United States and its allies, as well as Israel. Prominent factions within this coalition include Kata’ib Hezbollah, Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq, and Harakat al-Nujaba.

The group also declared its intention to continue operations targeting Israeli positions, warning that these attacks would “intensify” in the coming period. As of now, Israel has yet to confirm the reported strike.

The statement concluded with a religious reference, emphasizing their belief in “victory through divine” support.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq is part of the larger Iranian-led Axis of Resistance, which includes Hezbollah and other militias, and has carried out multiple drone strikes against Israeli targets in the past.
