Young Iraqi kickboxer wins international tournament, eyes world championship
SALAH AL-DIN — Saleh Ali, a 26-year-old athlete from Samarra, has made significant strides in the sport of kickboxing, recently winning first place at an international tournament in Cambodia. The week-long competition saw 700 athletes from 22 countries, with Ali emerging as the top contender. His victory has fueled his ambition to become a world champion and represent Iraq on the global stage.
“I’m 26 years old, a member of the national kickboxing team, and a student at the College of Administration and Economics at the University of Samarra,” Ali said in an interview with 964media. “I recently won first place at the Asian Championship in Cambodia, where around 700 athletes from 22 countries participated.”
Ali shared details about his rigorous preparation for the tournament, including a three-month training camp with daily morning and evening sessions. “Despite the challenges I faced, such as injuries and the pressure of balancing my studies, I was able to manage my time between training and academics,” he explained.
Ali’s ultimate goal is to become the world’s top kickboxer and bring pride to Iraq in both international and Asian competitions. “The feeling of victory was indescribable. The competition was incredibly tough, but with the support of my family, coach, and friends, I was able to achieve this accomplishment,” he said.
Kickboxing, now recognized as an Olympic sport, is a passion for Ali, who encourages young people to take up martial arts and self-defense. He credits the sport with improving his skills and shaping his journey as an athlete.
Ali also emphasized the need for greater support and recognition for Iraqi athletes. “I hope that more attention is given to our achievements so we can continue to raise Iraq’s name on the global stage,” he added.
With his eyes set on future championships, Ali remains determined to continue his journey and bring further honor to his country.
