'I relied on myself'

Street vendor and actor Ali Shaker overcomes disabilities to become community role model in Wasit

WASIT — Ali Shaker, a well-known street vendor in Al-Nu’maniyah district, has overcome significant challenges since birth, including physical disabilities and educational setbacks. Despite these obstacles, Shaker has become a beloved figure in his community, known for his persistence and resilience in both business and the arts.

Born with physical disabilities, including a dislocated joint and height issues, Shaker faced difficulties in his education, eventually leading him to drop out. However, he began his career as a street vendor, partnering with a friend to sell roasted sunflower seeds at a small stall. Later, Shaker parted ways with his partner and expanded his business, opening a larger shop that now supports his wife and two children.

In addition to his growing business, Shaker ventured into theater, performing in plays across Wasit, Basra, and Nasiriyah. He has earned several local awards for his performances, particularly in comedic roles. His artistic talents were nurtured by local theater director Abbas Al-Aboudi, who helped refine his acting skills.

“I have a disability and was subjected to a lot of bullying because of it, but I didn’t care about others’ opinions,” Shaker told 964media. “I relied on myself, starting with a small sunflower seed stall and later opening a larger shop without asking for help from anyone.” He credited a friend for teaching him the trade and emphasized how he built his business independently.

Shaker also discussed his experience in theater, having worked with Al-Aboudi at the Youth Forum of Al-Nu’maniyah. His acting achievements include winning the Best Actor Award in Basra for a comedic role, and he has also performed in plays in Nasiriyah.

Encouraging young people to persevere through challenges, Shaker said, “No matter the circumstances, young people should depend on themselves. With this stall, I got married, started a family, and provided everything my family needs.”

Director Abbas Al-Aboudi praised Shaker’s determination, saying, “Ali Shaker is a fighter and a struggler despite his health condition. He remained steadfast and managed to open a home and start a family through a small stall without asking for help. Now, he is a role model for other young people with his hard work, perseverance, and patience. He is also a talented comedic actor who has achieved progress and won several awards.”
