Erbil’s 86-year-old gardener maintains the city’s greenery by bicycle

ERBIL — In the bustling streets of Erbil, 86-year-old Mam Sharif Qadir can often be seen riding his bicycle, a homemade box of trimming tools attached to the back, as he quietly tends to the city’s greenery. For more than 15 years, Mam Sharif has taken care of the gardens and public spaces in Erbil, pruning trees and keeping the streets clean.

Known throughout the Mamostayan neighborhood, he rides from street to street each day, offering his gardening services. “For over 15 years, I’ve been riding my bicycle from street to street, trimming and maintaining people’s gardens,” Mam Sharif told 964media.

Despite his age, this work is his only source of income. “It’s just my wife, daughter, and me at home. We have no pension, so I rely on this job to support us,” he explained. The physical demands are challenging, but he remains determined. “I’ve never had an accident, and even though I have some health issues, I’m still able to work,” he said.

With summer, Mam Sharif’s workload increased as more residents rely on his services to care for their gardens. His dedication has made him a beloved figure in Erbil, with many admiring his commitment to beautifying the city.
