Al-Sudani heads to New York for UN General Assembly

BAGHDAD — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has departed for New York to lead Iraq’s delegation at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, his office announced on Saturday.

Al-Sudani will deliver Iraq’s address to the General Assembly and participate in the “Summit of the Future,” which will focus on global security, economic development, and climate change. He is also scheduled to meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and other world leaders.

The 79th UN General Assembly, which opened on September 10, brings together over 190 countries to discuss pressing global issues, with the general debate set to begin on September 24. This year’s theme, “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity,” emphasizes international cooperation.

At last year’s UN General Assembly, Al-Sudani highlighted Iraq’s battle against corruption, which he described as the top priority for his government. He also called for global assistance in recovering stolen assets and combatting terrorism, emphasizing that corruption and terrorism are interconnected challenges for Iraq.
