Iraq staves off US military response with diplomatic efforts after airbase attack
BAGHDAD — Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein announced on Tuesday that Iraq has successfully averted a potential U.S. military response to the recent attack on the Ain Al-Asad airbase through diplomatic channels. In his statement to the Al-Hadath network, Hussein highlighted ongoing efforts by Baghdad to mitigate regional conflict escalations.
Ain Al-Asad airbase, which frequently faces rocket attacks and hosts U.S. and coalition forces, was targeted on August 5. Security forces found the launch vehicle, a Kia truck fitted with a malfunctioning launcher, in the Haditha district shortly after the attack.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin responded to the incident by reaffirming the U.S. stance against attacks on its personnel, stating, “The United States will not tolerate attacks on our personnel in the region.” He attributed the attack to an Iran-backed militia and indicated a strategic shift in U.S. military posture to enhance force protection and readiness in the Middle East.
“The entire region is under threat,” Hussein remarked, referring to the broader regional tensions, including the ongoing Hamas-Israel conflict and potential repercussions involving Iranian and Hezbollah elements following targeted killings of key figures from these groups.
Hussein also discussed the broader implications of ongoing international efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, which he believes could stabilize the region. However, he cautioned that without a truce, tensions are likely to persist.
Amidst these developments, Hussein confirmed that dialogue concerning the withdrawal of international coalition forces from Iraq continues, despite the heightened regional tensions.
Highlighting Iraq’s sovereign role in regional peace, Hussein assured that the Iraqi government and parliament are central to decision-making on matters of war and peace, while also reaffirming Iraq’s commitment to protecting foreign missions and personnel on its soil.
