Young man drowns in Duhok river

SHILADZE – A 22-year-old man from Sulaymaniyah’s Dukan district drowned in the Rwi Shin River near Duhok’s Shiladze district on Wednesday. The man was part of a group of youths on a recreational outing.

“Two brothers were involved in the incident at the Rwi Shin River, with only one being rescued. He is currently being treated at Amedi Hospital,” said Bewar Abdulaziz, spokesperson for Duhok Civil Defense.

This drowning is the eighth in Duhok governorate since the beginning of the year, according to Duhok Civil Defense. Across the Kurdistan Region, 51 individuals, predominantly children, have drowned since the beginning of this year, while civil defense teams have saved nearly 70 people during that period. Last year, over 100 drownings were recorded across the Kurdistan Region.

In response to the drowning incidents, the Joint Crisis Coordination Centre in the Kurdistan Region convened last month to address the issue. The center reviewed existing safety protocols and identified high-risk locations, recommending several measures to the relevant authorities.
