Threatening major demonstrations
Tribes in Anbar demand release of former governor
ANBAR – The chiefs of the Albu Assaf and Albu Alwan tribes held a press conference Monday at the guesthouse of Sheikh Imad Hamad Al-Zaili Al-Assafi in Ramadi demanding the release of former Anbar governor Ali Farhan Al-Dulaimi.
Al-Dulaimi was recently sentenced to one year in prison for the “illegal” appointment of 83 advisors to the provincial office.
Tribal leaders and supporters of the former governor accuse political factions of orchestrating his arrest. “We call on the Iraqi judiciary, led by Judge Faiq Zaidan, to do justice for Ali Farhan Al-Dulaimi, as his targeting by other political parties is evident. Everyone in Anbar attests to his innocence,” said Ali Al-Ayil Al-Turki, head of the Al-Shummar tribe in Anbar.
Al-Turki stated that during his tenure, Farhan had made tremendous efforts to rebuild the city after it was 90 percent destroyed during the military operations against the Islamic State group. He warned that if Farhan is not released soon, other tribes will stage protest sit-ins, which could escalate into “major demonstrations.”
“We urge everyone to stand firmly to achieve justice,” he added.
