Iraq and Germany discuss voluntary return of Iraqi migrants

BAGHDAD –  Iraqi Migration and Displacement Minister Ivan Faiq Jabro met with German Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Assistance Luise Amtsberg and Ambassador Christiane Hohmann on Monday to discuss mechanisms for encouraging the voluntary return of Iraqi migrants from Germany. Minister Jabro emphasized Baghdad’s commitment to resolving issues faced by Iraqis whose asylum requests have been denied.

In a statement from the Ministry obtained by 964media, Jabro assured the German delegation that the Iraqi government placed “great emphasis… on finding appropriate mechanisms” to encourage rejected Iraqi asylum seekers to return back to Iraq voluntarily.

She also highlighted the importance of international support in returning internally displaced persons to areas like Sinjar and emphasized the need for stabilization projects in alignment with government policies.

Commissioner Amtsberg affirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting the Iraqi government and the Ministry of Migration and Displacement in facilitating voluntary returns and reintegration into Iraqi society. She also expressed support for returning internally displaced Iraqis to their home areas and for ongoing stabilization efforts.

In 2023, 26,000 Iraqis sought asylum in European Union countries, with 43 percent of the claims filed in Germany. Between August 2021 and August 2022, Germany was the primary destination for Iraqi asylum seekers.
