Five members of same family drown in Raparin village incident
RAPARIN — A devastating drowning incident claimed the lives of five members of the same family Friday evening in Qamtaran village, within the Chwarqurna sub-district of the Raparin administration.
Rabar Hassan, a spokesperson for the Raparin police, reported that the tragedy occurred at a local pond known to the community. “A child fell into the pond, prompting the father to jump in to rescue him,” Hassan told 964media. “Three other family members followed, and tragically, all five drowned together.”
The deceased, identified as herders from Merga Mushk village in the Bajil sub-district of Akre, had been in Qamtaran village for nearly two weeks tending to their livestock.
Hassan confirmed the victims were a father, his two daughters, and two grandchildren. Their bodies are currently held at the forensic medicine facility in Ranya, awaiting post-mortem examinations before being released to relatives. The Ranya police have launched an investigation into the incident.
The Kurdistan Region’s Civil Defense Directorate noted that this event is part of a trend, with 26 drownings recorded in the first five months of this year alone. Last year, over 100 drownings were reported, despite the efforts of civil defense teams who rescued nearly 70 individuals, marking an increase from the 77 drownings recorded the previous year.
