Convict implicated himself with social media videos
Iraqi Court issues death sentence for a perpetrator of Yazidi genocide
BAGHDAD — The Karkh Criminal Court issued a death sentence by hanging on Tuesday for an individual convicted of committing genocide against the Yazidis. The perpetrator, a member of the Islamic State (ISIS) organization, executed several Yazidi citizens, buried them, and disseminated videos of the acts.
According to a statement by the High Judicial Council Media Office, “The criminal, along with members of his military detachment, executed several Yazidi citizens, buried them, and published video clips of the crimes on social media platforms affiliated with a terrorist group.” The individual was also involved in attacks on security forces in Nineveh and Salah Al-Din provinces.
The court issued the sentence under Anti-Terrorism Law No. 13 of 2005 and the Yazidi Survivors Law No. 8 of 2021.
Over 5,000 Yazidis were killed by ISIS, with around 360,000 displaced within Iraq and more than 100,000 forced to flee the country. The Yazidi community continues to face the lasting impacts of genocide, displacement, and various hardships into 2024.
According to the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration, ISIS destroyed up to 80 percent of public infrastructure and 70 percent of civilian homes in Sinjar and its surrounding areas.
On June 3, Women from the Sinjar district held a protest on Mosul’s Al-Manasa Street at a site reportedly used by ISIS to burn 19 Yazidi women alive on this day in 2016.
