'Journey of a Brush to Self-Affirmation'
18-year-old artist opens first exhibition in Anbar
HADITHA, Anbar — Nariman Al-Obaidi, an 18-year-old artist, launched her first exhibition titled “Journey of a Brush to Self-Affirmation” at the Cultural House in Haditha, drawing senior officials, local dignitaries, and intellectuals. The showcase features more than 50 works, highlighting Al-Obaidi’s preference for charcoal and pencil, mediums that allow her to express deep and often somber human emotions.
Born in 2006, Al-Obaidi has pursued drawing from a young age, encouraged by her family’s unwavering support. “My father’s support was instrumental in organizing this exhibition,” she told 964media. Her artistic expressions have evolved from addressing addiction issues in her earliest works to illustrating significant Islamic narratives such as the Isra and Mi’raj.
During the Isra, Muslims believe the Islamic prophet Muhammad traveled on the winged creature Buraq to Al-Aqsa, and in the Mi’raj, ascended to heaven.
Al-Obaidi’s father, Farhan Al-Obaidi, noted his early recognition of her artistic inclination. “I noticed her love for art at the age of eight,” he said. He supported her passion by providing art supplies and enrolling her at an art institute in Turkey, where she completed a six-month course.
Despite still being in her final year of high school, Al-Obaidi has already exhibited her works at various events, including at the Imam Khatib Turkish School. “I am very proud of her as an educated artist,” her father added.
Baha Yassin Al-Obaidi, Director of the Cultural House Division, emphasized the exhibition’s role in fostering local talent across various artistic domains. “This exhibition is part of our mission to nurture talents and creativity,” he stated.
The exhibition, featuring landscapes and personal portraits, not only showcases Al-Obaidi’s artistic prowess but also sets high expectations for her future contributions to the arts.
