Sulaymaniyah man releases 100 Chukar Partridges in wildlife preservation effort
SULAYMANIYAH — Sharifi Haji Rasul, a resident of Sulaymaniyah, released 100 chukar partridges into the Hawari Shar Park on Tuesday, adding to his ongoing commitment to wildlife preservation.
Governor Haval Abubaker attended the release, which marks the latest effort by Rasul, who released 20 chukars last week and 400 last year in the Shinkayeti, Safra, and Zeroni regions of the Mawat area.
“I have a deep affection for nature and cannot bear to see its beauty diminish,” Rasul told 964media, adding that chukars and other animals in the country are at risk of extinction due to what he called “unconscientious hunting.”
He emphasized his hope to inspire others to protect wildlife, explaining that he began his project of releasing birds into the wild in an effort to encourage others to stop hunting. “Thankfully, it has taken hold, influencing some to stop hunting,” he said. “This has been a source of joy for me.”
Last year’s release of 400 chukars has shown positive results, according to Rasul. “The impact is clear; if you pass through these areas now, you can see groups of ten or fifteen chukars together.” According to him, chukars lay at least fifteen eggs annually.
For Rasul, chukars are among the most beautiful animals, bringing necessary diversity to the region’s ecosystem.”If they were to disappear from our landscapes, it would truly be a loss.”
