Iraq beats Vietnam with last-gasp winner to top group
January 24 – Iraq triumphed over Vietnam on Wednesday in their final group stage game of the Asian Championship.
Vietnam led at half time through Bui Hoang Viet Anh but Iraq took the lead via goals from Rebin Sulaka and Aymen Hussein.
Vietnam clawed back parity with 91 minutes on the clock for what they thought would be their first point of the tournament. But Hussein struck again in the 12th minute of injury time to seal a perfect group stage for Iraq.
With three wins from three, Iraq tops its group with 9 points, advancing to the Round of 16, where they will face one of the best third-placed teams from Group 2, 5, or 6.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani congratulated the Iraqi national team on X, formally known as Twitter:
Congratulations to our national team players on qualifying for the knockout rounds of the AFC Asian Cup with 9 points. Best wishes for the upcoming matches, aiming to elevate Iraq’s name in victory stand.
